Portrait of a People Pleaser | The Weight we Carry, 2026
Original art piece 30x30cm, acrylics on canvas
Part of the art series The Weight we Carry which dips deeper into the emotions and memories that accompany us for a long time
In Portrait of a People Pleaser, the canvas questions where a person's identity truly resides. In place of the traditional portrait, where the face and eyes reveal the self, the hands take center stage. They become the subject, while the face turns toward them as though searching for its own reflection. The work explores the quiet belief that worth is earned through what we create, accomplish, and give to others. Hands become a measure of value, carrying expectations, achievements, and acts of service that slowly eclipse the person behind them. Even as those beliefs begin to loosen, an unsettling question remains: who are we when our hands are still? If we cannot produce, perform, or meet the needs of others, what part of us remains worthy? The piece invites the viewer to consider the identity that exists beyond usefulness, and the difficult process of rediscovering a self that has always deserved to exist simply as it is.
